Canelo Alvarez Defeats Christian Mbilli to Reclaim WBC Super Middleweight Title

Saul Canelo Alvarez returned to the top of the super middleweight division with a commanding unanimous decision victory over France's Christian Mbilli in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday, reclaiming the WBC world championship.

The 36-year-old Mexican secured the win after 12 rounds, delivering a performance that demonstrated his experience, composure and ability to adjust against a younger opponent. The victory also marked an important comeback following his September 2025 defeat to American boxing star Terence Crawford.

The contest initially developed into a closely fought tactical battle. Alvarez controlled the opening round, but Mbilli gradually increased his aggression, finding success with combinations and taking the initiative by the third round. The Frenchman continued applying pressure in the fifth, making the early stages competitive.

Alvarez, however, began to establish control in the sixth round. His experience became increasingly evident in the seventh when he trapped Mbilli against the ropes and connected with a powerful right uppercut that visibly unsettled the French challenger.

The momentum shifted further in Alvarez's favor during the eighth round after Mbilli was penalized a point for striking behind the head. The deduction added to the Frenchman's difficulties, while Alvarez capitalized by controlling the exchanges and dictating the pace through the remaining rounds.

Mbilli, 31, had been elevated to championship status in January, but his first major test against Alvarez proved difficult. The Mexican veteran gradually neutralized his opponent's aggression and turned a competitive encounter into a convincing points victory.

The emotional significance of the achievement was evident during the post-fight celebrations. Alvarez struggled to put his feelings into words as he received the championship belt, reflecting on his lengthy professional career and the personal importance of becoming a world champion again.

The victory carries additional significance for Alvarez, who first captured a world title approximately 16 years ago. More than two decades into his professional boxing journey, reclaiming the WBC championship represents another milestone in an already decorated career.

The event also proceeded against a backdrop of heightened regional security concerns. Escalating tensions involving Saudi Arabia and Yemen's Houthi movement, including drone attacks and intercepted missiles, had forced the cancellation of several sporting events in the country.

Among the affected competitions were the Six Kings Slam tennis exhibition and the final round of the World Rally Championship. Combat sports events, however, continued as scheduled, allowing Alvarez and Mbilli to headline the Riyadh boxing card.
