Alex Eala moved one step closer to securing her second WTA
Tour championship after defeating former world No. 3 Maria Sakkari in a
hard-fought semifinal at the WTA 250 Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open on
Saturday.
The 21-year-old Filipina overcame a second-set setback and a
determined late comeback from her Greek opponent to claim a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4
victory in a contest lasting two hours and 43 minutes at Victoria Park Tennis
Stadium.
Rain repeatedly interrupted play, testing the concentration
and patience of both competitors. However, Eala maintained her composure when
the match reached its decisive moments, demonstrating the resilience that has
characterized her campaign in Hong Kong.
Seeded second and ranked No. 17 in the world, Eala initially
took control of the match by winning three consecutive games to close out the
opening set, recovering from a set-point deficit along the way.
Sakkari, the fourth seed and world No. 30, responded
emphatically in the second set. The 31-year-old opened with three straight
games and eventually secured the set 6-3, forcing the semifinal into a deciding
third set.
Eala regained the initiative with another strong opening,
building a 3-0 advantage before extending her lead to 4-1. Sakkari refused to
surrender, however, winning three consecutive games to restore parity and put
the outcome back in doubt.
The Filipino responded by holding her serve before securing
another crucial break to finish the match. Although Sakkari held a considerable
advantage in serving power, recording 12 aces against Eala's two, the Greek
veteran also committed six double faults, most of them during the deciding set.
Eala credited her ability to remain mentally focused
throughout the weather interruptions as a major factor in her victory. The
pauses, she explained, provided opportunities to regroup and concentrate on the
points ahead rather than lose momentum.
Her semifinal appearance marked her first three-set
encounter in the tournament. She had previously defeated Australia's Emerson
Jones, 6-4, 6-3; Czechia's Tereza Valentova, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7); and Croatia's
Antonia Ruzic, 7-6 (9-7), 7-5.
The victory over Sakkari now sets up a championship showdown
against American Claire Liu, ranked No. 102 in the world. Liu secured her place
in the final by beating Russia's Alexandra Shubladze, 7-5, 6-4.
Despite entering the competition unseeded, Liu has emerged
as one of the tournament's biggest surprises. Her run included victories over
eighth seed Katie Boulter of Great Britain, ranked No. 49, and Turkey's Zeynep
Sonmez, ranked No. 67 and a close friend of Eala.
The upcoming final gives Eala an opportunity to add another
major milestone to her professional career. She is pursuing her second WTA Tour
singles title following her maiden championship triumph in Washington last
August.
With momentum on her side and a place in the Hong Kong final secured, the Filipina now has one more challenge between her and another historic achievement in her rapidly advancing tennis career.
