Godzilla Film Festival Brings Five Kaiju Classics to
Philippine Cinemas
Filipino fans of Japan’s most famous kaiju will get a rare
big-screen celebration this October as the country hosts its first-ever
Godzilla Film Festival.
From October 14 to 20, participating SM Cinemas will screen
five entries spanning several decades of the franchise, giving audiences an
opportunity to revisit major chapters in Godzilla’s cinematic history. Tickets
are priced at P275.
The festival lineup includes Mothra vs. Godzilla from 1964,
Godzilla vs. Biollante from 1989, Godzilla 2000: Millennium from 1999,
Godzilla: Final Wars from 2004, and Shin Godzilla from 2016.
The selection also reflects how the character has evolved
since Godzilla first appeared in 1954. What began as a powerful metaphor for
the devastation caused by nuclear weapons gradually expanded into stories about
environmental threats, disasters, scientific consequences and humanity’s
struggle against forces it cannot fully control.
That enduring concept has allowed Godzilla to remain
relevant across generations. The franchise has also built its identity around
spectacular monster battles, with the giant reptile facing adversaries ranging
from the winged Mothra to Biollante, a genetically engineered creature created
using Godzilla’s own cells.
Among the festival selections, Shin Godzilla occupies a
particularly notable place in the modern franchise. The 2016 film is frequently
regarded as one of the strongest reinterpretations of the character, alongside
the original 1954 movie and Godzilla Minus One, the 2023 film that won the
Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
Interest in the franchise is also receiving another boost
with the anticipated follow-up to Godzilla Minus One, titled Godzilla Minus
Zero, scheduled for release this year.
Beyond the films themselves, the Philippine festival is
adding a collectible element for fans. Moviegoers who purchase tickets at
participating locations can receive exclusive Godzilla collectible cards,
giving the event an added appeal for longtime followers and collectors.
With films covering more than five decades of Godzilla storytelling, the festival offers Philippine audiences a chance to experience the evolution of one of cinema’s most recognizable monsters on the big screen once again.
