DOH Records 5,835 Leptospirosis Cases in 2026 as Infections Rise Amid Flooding

 

The Department of Health (DOH) is warning the public against a renewed rise in leptospirosis cases as persistent flooding and the southwest monsoon increase exposure to potentially contaminated floodwaters.

The country has recorded 5,835 leptospirosis cases so far this year, with the DOH reporting a 29 percent increase in cases over the past two weeks. Health officials said the upward trend could worsen if people continue entering floodwaters without adequate protection.

The National Capital Region has the highest number of reported infections at 1,733, followed by Central Luzon with 632 cases and Cagayan Valley with 561.

Despite the recent increase, the nationwide total remains below last year's figure. The DOH recorded 7,187 cases during the same reporting period in 2025, meaning this year's count is 19 percent lower. Fatalities have also declined, from 764 deaths last year to 358 this year.

Health officials, however, stressed that the lower annual figures should not create a false sense of security. With flooding providing widespread opportunities for exposure, even a comparatively lower case count can quickly change when people come into contact with contaminated water.

Leptospirosis is caused by Leptospira bacteria, which can enter the body through cuts or other breaks in the skin. The bacteria may be present in environments contaminated by the urine of infected animals, particularly rats and pigs. Floodwater can therefore become a significant source of exposure, especially in areas affected by prolonged flooding.

The DOH is advising people who have been exposed to floodwaters to bathe immediately with soap and clean water. Individuals with existing wounds or injuries should seek assessment at the nearest health facility, where medical professionals can determine whether preventive treatment or other interventions are necessary.

Early consultation remains particularly important because leptospirosis can become serious if treatment is delayed. Seeking medical advice soon after significant exposure allows health workers to evaluate the level of risk and determine whether prophylaxis is appropriate.

The health campaign is also extending to schools. The Department of Education (DepEd) has instructed public schools nationwide to strengthen their prevention efforts against both dengue and leptospirosis.

School heads, health personnel and other staff have been directed to maintain strict sanitation practices and intensify health monitoring for suspected cases. The measures are intended to reduce disease transmission and ensure that potential infections are identified and addressed as early as possible.

With the rainy season continuing to create flood-related health risks, authorities are emphasizing a straightforward principle: avoiding unnecessary contact with floodwater remains one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of leptospirosis.
