Pokemon World Championships 2026 Opens in San Francisco With Thousands of Players and Fans

 

SAN FRANCISCO, California: The Pokemon World Championships 2026 has officially begun, bringing the world’s top competitive players together at the Moscone Center for three days of high-level competition and fan activities.

More than 3,000 competitors are expected to participate in this year’s championships, according to Chris Brown, director for Global Esports and Events at The Pokemon Company International. The event is also projected to draw approximately 50,000 fans throughout the weekend.

The championships feature four major competitive titles: the Pokemon Trading Card Game, Pokemon video games, Pokemon Go and Pokemon Unite. Players will battle for world championship honors as the competition reaches its most prestigious stage.

The opening ceremony set the tone for the weekend with a large-scale orchestral performance led by the 8-bit Big Band. The music took attendees on a tour through the Pokemon universe, highlighting regions including Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh and Unova.

The presentation went beyond music, combining live performances, dancers and video segments featuring some of the franchise’s most recognizable moments. The production gave the opening ceremony the atmosphere of a major global entertainment event rather than simply the start of a gaming competition.

The celebration carries additional significance this year as Pokemon marks its 30th anniversary. The milestone has added another layer to an already significant gathering, connecting the franchise’s long history with its rapidly expanding competitive scene.

Pokemon Company CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara welcomed both competitors and spectators, emphasizing the importance of bringing different generations of fans together during the anniversary celebrations.

For the players, however, the weekend represents much more than a celebration. Reaching the World Championships requires sustained competition, preparation and determination throughout the season. Ishihara recognized those qualities while pointing to the competitors as examples for younger players who aspire to reach the same stage.

The influence of the championships extends beyond the tournament brackets. Pokemon XP is running alongside the competition, offering visitors a broader selection of activities, attractions and panel discussions. The event gives families, casual fans and longtime players an opportunity to experience the Pokemon brand even if they are not competing.

The festivities began before the championships officially opened. The Pokemon Center store welcomed the public on Thursday, giving fans an early opportunity to explore event merchandise.

A Pokemon Worlds Night followed on Friday at Oracle Park, where the San Francisco Giants defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-1. The evening concluded with a Pokemon-themed drone show that illuminated the sky above the ballpark with aerial displays featuring characters from the franchise.

With the World Championships now underway, San Francisco has become the center of the competitive Pokemon community for the weekend. Between the international tournament, anniversary celebrations and Pokemon XP attractions, the event is positioned as both a major esports competition and a large-scale celebration of one of gaming’s most enduring franchises.
