AI Short Dramas Are Reshaping Romance Fiction and Threatening the Actors Who Built the Industry

 

The latest evolution of short-form entertainment is no longer limited to familiar actors performing familiar fantasies. Increasingly, audiences are encountering dramas populated by characters who were never born, never auditioned and never stepped onto a film set.

AI-generated short dramas are rapidly gaining visibility across video and social media platforms, particularly in China and English-language markets. Their formula is highly recognizable: impossibly handsome male leads, elaborate fantasy worlds, powerful mafia figures, royal heirs, dragon kings and romantic plots built around contract marriages, reincarnation or women transported into fictional worlds.

The stories themselves are hardly revolutionary. What has changed is the technology used to bring them to life.

From microdramas to AI-generated fantasies

Vertical dramas and microdramas have become a significant part of digital entertainment, largely because their short episodes are designed for mobile viewing. Many rely on familiar formulas that require little explanation. A wealthy mafia boss falls for an ordinary woman. A crown prince enters a political marriage. A modern woman suddenly finds herself inside a novel and must navigate a world she already knows from the pages.

Traditionally, these productions depended on live actors, many of whom built their careers almost entirely within the short-drama ecosystem.

The Philippines has already demonstrated the appetite for serialized Asian entertainment. Earlier this year, Chinese long-form dramas generated enormous online interest, with Pursuit of Jade, starring Zhang Linghe and Tian Xiwei, becoming a particularly prominent example.

Now another form of Chinese entertainment is finding its way into the same digital spaces: dramas in which the performers themselves are generated or heavily created through artificial intelligence.

The rise of the perfect digital leading man

One of the most recognizable characteristics of these productions is their male protagonists.

AI-generated actors frequently draw from a visual template associated with internationally recognizable stars. Henry Cavill is an especially obvious reference point, while the appearance of Chinese stars such as Xu Kai and Dylan Wang is also reflected in some AI-generated characters.

The result is a type of digital leading man engineered almost entirely around fantasy.

He might be a dragon lord presiding over a supernatural kingdom, a powerful wolf king surrounded by multiple potential brides, or an aristocratic general caught in an arranged marriage. In other stories, he becomes a crown prince, regent or wealthy businessman who initially treats the heroine with hostility before inevitably becoming obsessed with her.

The characters are often designed to satisfy the visual expectations of romance audiences with extraordinary precision. Height, facial symmetry, clothing, physique and dramatic expressions can all be manipulated without the limitations normally imposed by casting.

That gives producers an unusual advantage. Instead of searching for an actor who fits the character, the character can effectively be designed first and the actor generated afterward.

Why audiences keep clicking

The commercial appeal is straightforward.

These dramas are built around fantasy scenarios that already perform well in romance fiction. Titles such as Deny Me Dragon King, My Baby Daddy is the Elf Prince, Mafia Boss' Contract Bride and My Six Beast Husbands Refuse Me Divorce immediately communicate the premise and invite curiosity.

Social media algorithms amplify that effect.

A short clip may introduce an attractive character, reveal a dramatic confrontation and stop precisely when the audience wants to know what happens next. The unresolved ending becomes an advertisement for the next episode or an invitation to download an app offering additional episodes.

In this environment, the story does not necessarily need to be original to be effective. It needs to be immediately understandable, visually striking and sufficiently addictive to generate another click.

The fantasy has also begun spilling beyond the dramas themselves. Fan and community pages have circulated artwork and quote cards celebrating favorite characters, while some fans have edited their own photographs to place themselves beside fictional figures such as Don Moretti or Sinclair.

In effect, AI is not merely producing entertainment. It is manufacturing customizable fantasy characters around whom online fandoms can form.

A technology that changes the economics of production

The more consequential issue, however, is not the popularity of these fictional heroes. It is what happens when digital performers become cheaper and faster to produce than human ones.

A Financial Times report published on August 29, 2026, examined how advances in AI video generation are beginning to alter China's short-drama industry. The report pointed to tools such as ByteDance's Seedance 2.0, which allow producers to create increasingly sophisticated video content at a lower cost and in less time.

That shift matters because the short-drama business is built on volume. Producers can release large numbers of short productions, test which stories attract viewers and rapidly reproduce successful formulas.

AI fits that production model exceptionally well.

According to data cited by the Financial Times from the China Netcasting Services Association, approximately 128,000 short dramas were released during the first quarter of 2026, with 95% reported to have been AI-generated.

The figures illustrate how quickly the technology has moved from novelty to industrial application.

Human actors are already feeling the pressure

For performers, the transformation presents a far more serious question.

The short-drama boom created employment for a large pool of actors who may not have had opportunities in mainstream television or film. A report from the National School of Development at Peking University estimated that China's short-drama sector directly employed roughly 690,000 people in 2025.

That workforce now faces a market in which some roles can potentially be replaced by synthetic performers.

South China Morning Post has reported on the experiences of Chinese short-drama actors Xu Peng and Zhang Xiaolei, whose careers were disrupted as AI-generated productions expanded. Xu Peng has reportedly turned to selling vegetables, while Zhang Xiaolei has returned to agricultural work.

Their experiences illustrate a broader economic concern. AI does not have to eliminate every human performer to fundamentally change the industry. It only needs to reduce the number of jobs available, suppress production budgets or make certain types of roles less valuable.

For actors whose livelihoods depend on appearing in high-volume productions, even a partial shift toward synthetic performers could have substantial consequences.

The next phase of short-form entertainment

AI-generated dramas are unlikely to disappear simply because they raise concerns about employment. Their advantages are too significant for producers to ignore.

A digital performer does not require a traditional shooting schedule, does not age between productions and can be repeatedly placed into different worlds, costumes and scenarios. Once a particular visual character proves popular, that character can potentially be reused across numerous stories.

That creates an entertainment model closer to digital asset production than conventional filmmaking.

For viewers, the appeal is obvious: endless romantic fantasies populated by perfectly tailored heroes. For producers, the attraction is equally clear: faster production, lower costs and fewer conventional constraints.

But the transition also raises difficult questions about creative ownership, performer consent, likeness rights, employment and the future role of human actors.

The most important development may therefore not be the arrival of another handsome AI-generated mafia boss or dragon king on a smartphone screen. It is the emergence of a production system in which audiences may eventually become accustomed to characters created entirely by algorithms.

Short dramas have always sold escapism. AI is now making that escapism easier to manufacture, easier to personalize and potentially much harder for human performers to compete with.
