Love Songs Take Back the Spotlight as Fresh Pinoy Artists
Break Into Spotify Charts
The Philippine music scene is once again leaning heavily
toward romance, with a new generation of independent artists making a strong
impression on the latest Spotify hit lists.
At the center of the shift is Mariah Deborah, whose debut
hit Na Para Bang has climbed to the top of the current chart. The song explores
the familiar but complicated moment when friendship begins to turn into
romantic attraction, a theme that continues to resonate strongly with Filipino
listeners.
Mariah Deborah, whose real name is Mariah Deborah Cabatbat,
is a 24-year-old singer-songwriter from Calasiao, Pangasinan. A Communications
graduate of the University of the Philippines Baguio, she grew up surrounded by
music and started singing at an early age. She now works independently as a
singer, songwriter and producer.
Her songwriting path was influenced by Taylor Swift, and Na
Para Bang has become her breakthrough recording. Whether Bahagya and Hibang can
replicate that momentum remains to be seen, but her early success places her
among the emerging names worth watching in the local pop scene.
The resurgence of romantic music comes after a period when
hip-hop appeared poised to dominate the charts. HELLMERRY, Skusta Clee, Hev Abi
and RAPROJECT have all maintained a strong presence, while Arthur Nery also
crossed into the rap space through Palaisipan, his collaboration with Loonie.
Yet the latest rankings suggest that sentimental pop still
has considerable pull. Rather than disappearing, hip-hop continues to occupy
numerous positions across the chart, while softer songs are capturing the most
prominent spots.
Another standout is Esemborak, a folk group known for its
ukulele-driven sound. Its track Mahal Magmahal delivers a playful take on the
cost of falling in love. The title uses the Filipino word mahal in the sense of
expensive, turning the phrase into a humorous observation about rising everyday
expenses. The song connects romance with the realities of modern life, proving
that a love song can be both sweet and grounded.
Other emerging acts are also gaining attention. Jin DC
brings a nostalgic quality to Totoong Tayo, while Kyle Raphael appears on the
chart with Libo-libong Buwan (Uuwian). Awit Awards Best New Artist nicole adds
another romantic entry with Panaginip.
The broader chart picture is more diverse than the current
No. 1 position might suggest. Hip-hop remains a major force, with several
RAPROJECT SIX tracks, including Baby 123, Eyes Can’t Lie, Shulocks, Alabang and
Again. HELLMERRY also remains represented through Summer Crush, while Skusta
Clee and Flow G appear with Since Day One.
Meanwhile, established names continue to share space with
the newer generation. Adie appears with Paraluman, Cup of Joe remains
represented by Multo, Olivia Rodrigo lands on the list with The Cure, The 1975
with About You, and Willie Revillame with Siempre.
The latest Spotify lineup shows a Philippine music market
that is increasingly broad in both sound and audience. Love songs may have
reclaimed the highest position, but hip-hop and alternative pop remain firmly
embedded in the country's streaming culture.
The current chart also highlights a significant trend:
several of the songs commanding attention come from artists who are still
building their identities with listeners. Their rapid rise suggests that
streaming platforms are giving independent musicians a viable route from
obscurity to mainstream recognition.
