MPL Philippines Expands Brand Partnerships Beyond Esports
Broadcasts
The Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) esports ecosystem is
becoming more than a digital advertising opportunity for brands, with the
Mobile Legends Professional League Philippines (MPL PH) placing greater
emphasis on live fan experiences, community engagement, and long-term
partnerships.
As MLBB celebrates its 10th anniversary, the Philippine
league is exploring how to turn its substantial audience into a more connected
community, giving sponsors opportunities to engage fans both online and at
physical events.
The strategy reflects a broader shift in esports marketing.
Reaching viewers during a livestream can generate awareness, but creating
memorable experiences around the competition gives brands more opportunities to
establish meaningful connections with fans.
At its Brand Socials Night, MPL Philippines presented its
approach to bringing together broadcasts, social media, and in-person
activities to help partners connect with the same audience across multiple
channels.
MPL Philippines Business Development Head Lee Viloria
emphasized that live events offer something digital platforms cannot fully
replicate. While broadcasts and social media provide extensive reach, attending
a tournament allows fans to interact with the community, participate in
activities, and experience the competition firsthand.
MPL events now incorporate workshops, community programs,
sponsor activations, and player meet-and-greets alongside professional matches.
These additional activities give attendees more reasons to visit the venue and
create opportunities for brands to engage with them beyond conventional
advertising placements.
Brands Follow Different Paths Into the MLBB Community
MPL Philippines' commercial partnerships demonstrate how
companies can approach esports audiences at different stages of their marketing
strategies.
China Airlines, a relatively new partner that joined the
league this season, is initially focused on building awareness among younger
consumers. According to Viloria, the partnership remains exploratory, with both
sides assessing how effectively MPL can introduce the airline to its target
audience before developing more tailored campaigns.
Visa, meanwhile, is building on its earlier involvement in
MLBB esports. The global payments company first entered the scene through the
M7 World Championship before extending its presence into the Philippine league
this season.
Visa Philippines Head of Marketing Nico Leviste said the
company has learned that gaming audiences require a more specialized approach
than the methods typically used in its other sponsorships.
Creator partnerships, media selection, and communication
styles all play important roles in reaching fans. For Visa, entering esports
has also created opportunities to experiment with new ways of presenting the
brand and engaging a younger demographic.
The company's experience at MPL events has challenged the
assumption that digitally oriented audiences are primarily interested in online
interactions. Leviste observed that spectators at a live competition were
intensely focused on the matches, watching the action without the distractions
often associated with mobile-first audiences.
That level of attention reinforces the value of combining
digital campaigns with physical experiences.
Visa's current partnership includes ticketing promotions and
event-related benefits, including early ticket access for eligible cardholders.
Leviste also reported improvements in brand preference and relevance among
gaming audiences following the company's initial campaigns, alongside gradual
progress in establishing Visa as part of the community's culture.
Infinix Demonstrates the Value of Long-Term Integration
While China Airlines is still exploring its position and
Visa is expanding its presence, smartphone manufacturer Infinix illustrates how
a sustained relationship with MPL Philippines can evolve.
Infinix began working with the league in Season 11 and has
since broadened its involvement across multiple MLBB esports markets.
Its activations include user-generated content campaigns,
event booths, and online and live integrations designed to maintain visibility
throughout each season. Infinix Regional Marketing Lead for IP Marketing and
Business Development Harold Leonardo said the company's approach centers on
consistently supporting fans and contributing to the culture surrounding the
game.
The partnership initially faced skepticism when Infinix
became the league's official tournament phone. Some fans questioned whether the
devices were selected primarily because of the sponsorship arrangement.
In response, the partnership developed opportunities for
audiences to experience the products more directly. Activities such as Infinix
Fansiklaban, a community competition held alongside MPL Philippines, helped
bring product engagement closer to the actual gaming experience.
The approach demonstrates how sponsorship credibility can
develop through participation and product exposure rather than advertising
alone.
Authentic Fan Loyalty Remains the Priority
Despite the opportunities offered by its audience, MPL
Philippines recognizes that sponsorship visibility does not automatically
translate into purchases.
Viloria explained that the league can help brands design
campaigns around their marketing objectives and performance indicators, but the
final conversion depends on factors beyond MPL's control.
The distinction is important for companies evaluating
esports partnerships. A campaign may improve awareness, strengthen brand
perception, or encourage participation without immediately producing measurable
sales.
For MPL Philippines, its advantage lies in the depth of its
relationship with fans. The league treats its community as an active
stakeholder, using audience feedback to guide its development and improve the
overall experience.
That relationship cannot simply be manufactured through
sponsorship spending. Brands must earn recognition by participating
authentically in a culture that fans already care deeply about.
MPL Philippines returns this weekend for the final week of
the Season 18 group stages. Meanwhile, MLBB's 10th-anniversary celebrations
continue through the MLBB 10th Mall Fest at the Market! Market! Activity
Center, running until October 11.
Together, these activities highlight the league's broader commercial direction: combining the reach of esports broadcasts with experiences that give brands a more direct role in the community.
