The National Bureau of Investigation is closing in on Sen.
Ronald dela Rosa, with authorities saying they have developed promising leads
that could eventually result in the fugitive lawmaker’s arrest.
NBI Director Melvin Matibag disclosed the development during
the Saturday News Forum in Quezon City, where he confirmed that search
operations for dela Rosa have remained active since the senator went into
hiding in May.
Matibag stopped short of identifying the specific leads or
revealing operational details, citing the sensitive nature of the ongoing
manhunt. He nevertheless indicated that investigators remain confident in their
efforts to locate and apprehend the senator when circumstances allow.
The search stems from dela Rosa’s designation as a
co-perpetrator in alleged crimes against humanity linked to the Duterte
administration’s controversial war on drugs. He is also wanted by the
International Criminal Court in connection with the case.
Despite remaining out of public view for much of the period
since May, dela Rosa briefly returned to the political spotlight when he
appeared at the Senate and took part in the proceedings that resulted in Alan
Peter Cayetano’s installation as Senate president.
The NBI’s latest statement signals that the investigation
has moved beyond simply tracking the senator’s movements. Authorities are now
waiting for what Matibag described as the appropriate opportunity to execute an
arrest, suggesting that investigators are balancing the pursuit with the need
to ensure the operation can be carried out effectively.
For now, however, dela Rosa’s exact whereabouts remain undisclosed, while the NBI continues its efforts to locate him.
