Filipino Film Filipiñana Named Philippines’ Official 2027 Oscars Entry

 

The Philippines has selected Rafael Manuel’s Filipiñana as its official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2027 Academy Awards, giving the country another opportunity to break a long-standing Oscar barrier.

The film emerged as the Philippine entry from a field of shortlisted productions that included 58th, All the Things I Leave You (Patawid), I’mPerfect, Manila’s Finest, Quezon, Silenced Nights, and Sisa.

Government backing will extend beyond Filipiñana’s International Feature Film campaign. The selected film may also receive support for other Oscar categories where it qualifies, including Cinematography and Production Design, particularly during For Your Consideration campaigns connected to industry awards.

The Philippines will also continue promoting other productions for potential Academy recognition. 58th is set to receive support, while Arvin Belarmino and Kyla Romero’s Agapito will be backed for consideration in the Documentary and Live Action Short Film categories.

Filipiñana is based on Manuel’s award-winning short film of the same title. The feature centers on Isabel, played by Jorrybel Agoto, a new tee girl at an exclusive country club owned by Dr. Palanca, portrayed by Terry Guzman.

What begins as an ordinary day at the club develops into something more personal as Isabel becomes increasingly intrigued by Dr. Palanca. As the story unfolds, she discovers a connection between them that points to a shared history.

A parallel storyline follows Renato, played by Carlos Siguion-Reyna, as he attempts to persuade his niece Clara, portrayed by Carmen Castellanos, to remain in the Philippines and assume an important position in their family business. The narrative takes place within the span of a single day, linking personal discovery with questions of family, belonging and choice.

The film will face a particularly significant challenge on the international stage. No Philippine submission has ever secured an Academy Award nomination or even reached the shortlist in the Best International Feature Film category.

Previous Philippine entries have included Decade ’70, Anak, Heneral Luna, Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros, Ang Babae sa Septic Tank, Birdshot, On the Job: The Missing 8, and Magellan. Of those submissions, last year’s Magellan was regarded as one of the country’s strongest chances of advancing to the initial shortlist.

Filipiñana is not the only Tagalog-language production seeking a place in Oscar consideration. First Light, an Australian submission starring Filipino actress Ruby Ruiz, is also part of the broader international awards race.

With Filipiñana now carrying the Philippines’ official International Feature Film campaign, the film represents another concerted effort to place Philippine cinema within one of the world’s most prominent film award competitions. Its selection also puts renewed attention on the country’s continuing pursuit of its first-ever Oscar nomination in the category.
