Filipino-American actor Dave Bautista is already deep into
the physical transformation required for his next major role, as he prepares to
portray Kratos in Prime Video’s upcoming God of War series.
Bautista recently showed the progress of his latest training
regimen on social media, revealing that he has spent three weeks rebuilding his
physique through weight training. He said he expects to spend another two
months reaching the physical condition needed for the character, signaling that
his preparation is well underway.
The casting change came after Ryan Hurst, who was initially
selected to play Kratos, suffered a bicep injury during production. The injury
required surgery and threatened to push filming into 2027. Prime Video
ultimately brought in Bautista to take over the role, with the actor also
expected to reshoot material that had already been completed by Hurst.
The decision also reflects the scale of the production.
Prime Video has ordered two seasons of the video game adaptation, with plans
for them to be filmed consecutively. Recasting Bautista allows the production
to move forward without the extended delay that Hurst’s recovery could have
caused.
For Bautista, the role represents another demanding entry in
an action-heavy career. The former professional wrestler has built an extensive
film résumé featuring physically intense projects such as Stuber, Riddick,
Hotel Artemis, The Killer’s Game, Trap House, Dune and its sequel, Escape Plan,
and the My Spy films. His most recent action outing is The Wrecking Crew.
The God of War adaptation will draw from the storylines of
the franchise’s two most recent games. Rather than focusing solely on Kratos as
a warrior, the series will center on his relationship with his young son,
Atreus, who will be played by Callum Vinson.
The story begins with Kratos and Atreus undertaking a
journey to fulfill the final wish of Faye, Kratos’ late wife and Atreus’
mother, by spreading her ashes. Their mission places them in conflict with the
gods of the Norse world while forcing father and son to confront their own
shortcomings.
At the heart of the adaptation is a reversal of roles
between the two characters. Kratos attempts to guide Atreus toward becoming a
better god, while Atreus challenges his father to rediscover the qualities that
make him a better human.
Bautista’s physical preparation therefore goes beyond simply adding muscle. Kratos demands the presence of a formidable warrior, but the character’s story also requires emotional weight, making the role one of the actor’s more substantial challenges as he returns to the action genre.
