Kris Aquino has returned to the camera for a new Netflix
campaign, marking a notable on-screen appearance after years away from
long-form television and film projects. The comeback, however, came as she
continues to contend with autoimmune-related health challenges, according to
showbiz creator and longtime friend Mama Loi Villarama.
Aquino was tapped by the Philippine arm of Netflix for a
promotional campaign built around her familiar reputation for candid
commentary. For the project, she takes on the playful title of Chief Head of
Insights and Kontent Analysis, or C.H.I.K.A., where she reviews scenes from
Filipino productions and delivers her characteristic observations on how they
could be improved.
Behind the polished promotional material, however, the shoot
proved physically demanding for the actress and host.
Mama Loi, who attended the filming, shared behind-the-scenes
footage showing crew members wearing face masks as Aquino continues her
recovery from several autoimmune diseases. The production extended well beyond
her scheduled midnight cutoff, with Aquino reportedly remaining on set until
about 1:30 a.m.
The physical toll became more apparent after filming.
Aquino's youngest son, Bimby, was seen helping his mother rise from a chair,
highlighting the fatigue she experienced after the lengthy shoot.
Mama Loi also described Aquino's struggle with rheumatoid
arthritis, particularly the swelling affecting her knees and legs. The account
offered a glimpse into the difficulties Aquino faced while working in front of
the cameras despite her condition.
What stood out to Mama Loi was Aquino's professionalism
throughout the production. Despite the discomfort and exhaustion, she
reportedly maintained a positive attitude and did not complain. Her first takes
were consistently strong enough to be used, allowing her health struggles to
remain largely invisible during filming.
The appearance is significant given Aquino's extended
absence from regular entertainment projects. Her last major film appearances
came in 2018, when she starred in I Love You, Hater and made a cameo in Crazy
Rich Asians.
Her television work has likewise been limited in recent
years. Apart from occasional guest appearances on variety programs, Aquino's
last regular television stint was the travel and lifestyle program Trip ni
Kris, which aired briefly in 2017.
For fans who have followed Aquino's health journey, the
Netflix campaign represents more than a promotional appearance. It signals a
cautious return to an industry she has long been associated with, even as she
continues navigating the physical limitations brought by her health challenges.
Mama Loi's account underscored the significance of seeing
Aquino back in front of the camera, describing her as a true professional while
expressing hopes for her continued recovery.
Rather than a full-scale return to showbiz, the Netflix
project is a brief appearance. Still, for Aquino's longtime audience, seeing
the Queen of All Media resume one of her most recognizable roles may prove
meaningful after years largely away from the spotlight.
