Mynt IPO Success Hinges on Growth Beyond Historic Listing

The planned initial public offering of Mynt, the operator of GCash, is poised to become a landmark transaction for the Philippine capital market, but its significance will ultimately depend on what happens after the company enters the stock exchange.

Capital market expert Jonathan Ravelas said the long-term performance of Mynt should be assessed through its ability to generate sustainable growth, broaden its digital financial services, and expand its regional presence rather than through the maximum offer price indicated in its regulatory filings.

His assessment followed the Philippine Stock Exchange approval on September 18 of Mynt's application to list shares with a potential transaction value of up to P92.3 billion. If completed at that scale, the offering would rank as the largest public offering in Philippine stock market history.

Ravelas explained that the P10 maximum price cited in Mynt's filings should not be interpreted as a guaranteed valuation or the company's intended final offer price. Instead, it serves as a regulatory ceiling that provides flexibility while the company and underwriters determine the appropriate market price.

The final valuation will emerge through institutional book-building, where investor demand, company fundamentals, market conditions, and comparable companies are considered during price discovery. In practical terms, the P10 figure establishes the upper boundary, while the market determines where actual pricing settles.

For investors, Ravelas identified institutional participation and the quality of demand surrounding the offering as more consequential indicators. Strong participation from long-term investors could provide a broader capital base as Mynt moves from being one of the country's most widely used digital platforms into a more diversified financial technology company.

That expansion is already reflected in the range of services being developed around the GCash ecosystem. With more than 90 million registered users and 49 million active accounts, Mynt has an extensive customer base that can support additional products such as lending, wealth management, cross-border payments and digital services for merchants.

The opportunity can be viewed as a transition from a digital wallet into a broader financial services platform. Each additional service gives the company another avenue to generate revenue from an established user ecosystem while potentially increasing the frequency and depth of customer engagement.

Mynt is backed by major investors including Globe Telecom Inc., Ayala Corp. and Ant Group. Its growth prospects will therefore be closely watched as the company seeks to convert its large domestic footprint into broader financial and commercial opportunities.

The IPO also introduces a significant change for retail investors. Filipinos who have primarily interacted with GCash as consumers will have the opportunity to participate in the company as shareholders, subject to the final offering terms and allocation.

Scam Watch Pilipinas Co-Founder Jocel De Guzman welcomed the capital market development while emphasizing that greater retail participation must be accompanied by continued consumer protection and stronger awareness of digital security risks.

The broader economic implications extend beyond Mynt itself. Department of Trade and Industry Secretary Cristina Roque pointed to digital payment infrastructure as an important tool for micro, small and medium enterprises seeking to reach customers beyond traditional geographic markets. Digital transactions can also help local businesses prepare for cross-border opportunities associated with the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement.

Under the PSE-approved structure, Mynt may issue up to 1.61 billion primary common shares and offer up to 6.42 billion secondary common shares. An overallotment option covering as many as 1.20 billion additional secondary shares is also included.

Funds raised through the primary offering are intended to support the company's expansion of digital financial services, technology infrastructure, product development and general corporate requirements.

The transaction has already received pre-effective clearance from the Securities and Exchange Commission. Mynt is scheduled to finalize its IPO price on October 1, conduct its public offering from October 6 to 12, and list on the PSE Main Board on October 20 under the ticker symbol GCASH.

Retail participation is also being built into the offering process. Philippine investors will be able to subscribe through the GStocks feature within the GCash app and through the PSE EASy online platform.

For the Philippine market, the Mynt IPO represents more than a record-setting transaction. Its longer-term importance will be measured by whether the capital raised translates into stronger products, wider financial access, sustainable earnings and continued expansion after the opening-day headlines fade.
