LRT-2 Limits Operations After Lightning Damages Power Line Near Antipolo

 

Train operations along the Light Rail Transit Line 2 were temporarily reduced Tuesday afternoon, September 22, after a lightning strike damaged a catenary power wire near Antipolo Station.

The Light Rail Transit Authority said the disruption prompted a limited operating arrangement, with trains running only between Recto Station and Araneta Center-Cubao Station in both directions.

The affected section near Antipolo was placed outside the temporary service coverage while repair and restoration efforts are addressed. The incident effectively shortened the line’s operating reach, leaving passengers bound for stations beyond Cubao to make alternative travel arrangements until normal service resumes.

The LRTA issued its advisory at around 3:00 p.m., urging commuters to monitor its official social media channels for further announcements on the status of operations.

The disruption came after the state weather bureau PAGASA warned earlier in the day of moderate to heavy rain showers accompanied by lightning and strong winds in 11 areas. Antipolo, Rizal was among the locations included in the weather advisory, which was issued at around 11:00 a.m. and covered the succeeding two hours.

The incident highlights how severe weather can affect rail infrastructure, particularly overhead electrical systems that supply power to trains. For commuters, the immediate priority remains monitoring official LRTA updates as restoration work progresses.
