The final sales tallies for 2025 confirm a decisive turning
point in the Philippine automotive market. For the first time in years, the
long-standing hierarchy at the top has been disrupted. The Mitsubishi Xpander
has emerged as the country’s best-selling vehicle, overtaking the Toyota Vios
and signaling a broader change in what Filipino buyers now value.
This outcome is not an isolated anomaly. It reflects a
gradual but unmistakable recalibration of consumer priorities, away from
traditional subcompact sedans and toward multi-purpose vehicles that better
accommodate families, cargo, and flexible daily use.
A New Leader, by the Narrowest Margin
The Xpander claimed the top spot with 28,081 units sold
across its MY2025 and MY2026 variants. The Toyota Vios followed closely with
27,811 units, a gap of only 270 vehicles. While slim, this margin is
symbolically significant. It marks the end of the Vios’s long tenure as the
country’s most popular car and underscores the growing appeal of MPVs as
all-around transport solutions rather than single-purpose commuter cars.
Think of it as a shift from specialization to adaptability.
Buyers are increasingly choosing vehicles that can handle weekday commutes,
weekend family trips, and occasional hauling without compromise.
MPVs Gain Ground, Sedans Hold On
The broader Top 10 reinforces this trend. The Toyota Avanza
rose to third place, benefiting from the same demand that propelled the Xpander
to the top. The Toyota HiAce, a much larger people mover, secured fifth place,
further strengthening the case for space and utility as dominant purchase
drivers.
By contrast, the Toyota Innova, once a consistent Top 5
performer, slid to tenth place. Sedans have not disappeared, but their
dominance is clearly under pressure. The Mitsubishi Mirage, a direct rival of
the Vios, landed in eighth place with 17,757 units sold, showing that
price-sensitive buyers remain active but less influential than before.
Total Market Performance in 2025
Overall vehicle sales in the Philippines reached 492,438
units in 2025, representing a modest 3.74 percent increase year-on-year. While
growth was not explosive, it was steady and broad-based. The data, compiled by
AutoIndustriya.com from CAMPI, TMA, and PADA submissions, suggests a mature
market that is evolving rather than merely expanding.
Notably absent from the Top 10 are electric vehicles and
hybrids. Their sales are rising, but adoption has not yet reached the scale
required to challenge internal combustion mainstays in absolute volume terms.
Brand Rankings Remain Firm at the Top
Despite losing the top model ranking, Toyota Motor
Philippines remains firmly entrenched as the country’s dominant automotive
brand. With 227,595 units sold, Toyota captured approximately 45.45 percent of
the total market in 2025. This commanding lead reflects the depth of its lineup
rather than reliance on a single bestseller.
Mitsubishi retained second place with 86,808 units sold,
translating to a 17.63 percent market share. Its performance was anchored by
the Xpander, which alone outsold many entire brand portfolios.
BYD’s Rapid Ascent
The most striking brand-level development came from BYD. The
Chinese automaker surged from 11th place in 2024 to third in 2025, selling
26,122 units and capturing a 5.3 percent market share. This represents a
dramatic leap from its previous 1.02 percent share.
While the achievement is notable, perspective matters.
Toyota sold more Vios units alone than BYD sold vehicles across its entire
lineup. Mitsubishi’s Xpander also exceeded BYD’s total volume by itself. BYD’s
rise is impressive, but it remains a challenger brand operating far behind the
market’s two entrenched leaders.
That said, its growing portfolio of electrified vehicles
positions it well for future shifts in regulation, fuel economics, and consumer
awareness. Momentum is clearly on its side.

The Bigger Picture
The 2025 sales rankings illustrate a market in transition.
Practicality now outweighs tradition, and flexibility has become a core selling
point. While legacy brands continue to dominate through scale and trust,
emerging players are proving that rapid gains are possible when product
strategy aligns with evolving demand.
The hierarchy has not collapsed, but it has shifted. And that shift is likely to define the next phase of the Philippine automotive market.
