Disney has chosen actress and singer Kai Montinola to
introduce a new Filipino interpretation of one of its most recognizable
animated songs, further strengthening the connection between Filipino audiences
and the Moana franchise.
The localized track, titled Hangganan Ko, serves as
the Filipino adaptation of How Far I'll Go, the signature song from
Disney's 2016 animated hit Moana. It will be released on digital
streaming platforms beginning July 3, arriving just days before the live-action
adaptation premieres in Philippine cinemas.
The selection of Kai reflects Disney's effort to introduce
the beloved anthem to a new generation of fans. According to Allie Benedicto,
Disney's Marketing Director for Emerging Southeast Asia, Moana continues
to resonate strongly with Filipinos because of its enduring themes of family,
resilience, courage, and a deep connection to the sea. She said Kai's
determination and warmth mirror the qualities that define many young Filipinos
today, making her a natural choice to perform Hangganan Ko.
For Kai, Moana's greatest strength lies not in perfection
but in her willingness to confront uncertainty. She shared that what inspires
her most about the character is how Moana acknowledged her fears instead of
allowing them to stop her. By choosing to move forward despite her doubts,
Moana ultimately fulfilled a greater purpose. That message, Kai believes, is
one that remains meaningful for audiences of all ages.
The release of Hangganan Ko continues Disney's
tradition of producing Filipino versions of its iconic songs. In 2016, Janella
Salvador recorded the local rendition of How Far I'll Go for the
original animated film. More recently, Belle Mariano performed Anong
Daratnan?, the Filipino adaptation of Beyond for Moana 2.
Each version has helped make the franchise more accessible while preserving the
emotional essence of the original music.
Fans will also have the opportunity to hear Kai perform the
new song live. She is scheduled to appear at SM Mall of Asia on July 8 and at
SM Seaside Cebu on July 12. Disney has likewise confirmed that an official
music video for Hangganan Ko will be released soon.
The upcoming live-action adaptation introduces Catherine
Laga'aia as the new Moana, succeeding Auli'i Cravalho, who voiced the character
in the original animated film. Dwayne Johnson returns as Maui, while Jemaine
Clement reprises his role as Tamatoa. The cast also includes John Tui and
Frankie Adams as Moana's parents, Chief Tui and Sina, alongside Rena Owen as
her grandmother Tala.
By pairing a rising Filipino artist with one of Disney's most celebrated songs, the company continues its approach of blending global storytelling with local talent. The result is a familiar anthem presented through a distinctly Filipino voice, giving audiences another reason to look forward to the return of Moana on the big screen.
